Christine's Canon: Christine Daaé was born in Sweden as the only child of a violinist, Gustav Daaé. She was orphaned when she was 7 and she moved to the Opera Populaire so that she could begin to train to be a ballerina. When she was in her early teens she began receiving voice lessons from a mysterious teacher - before her father had died he had told Christine that she would be protected by an angel of music and Christine believed that this person who came to her was the angel that her father had promised her. Christine didn't think there was anything wrong with this and she mostly kept this quiet, the only other person she told about her lessons was Madame Giry (the Ballet mistress at the Opera Populaire). Christine's life changed forever when she was 16, the same day that two new managers (Andre and Firmin) purchased the Opera Populaire when they learnt that the place was supposedly 'haunted' by an Opera Ghost. After the Prima Donna, Carlotta, stormed off from rehearsal (and after facing the prospect of having to refund a full house) the managers reluctantly let Christine audition to sing in Carlotta's place after Madame Giry told them that she was taking lessons from a great teacher. Christine was a great success at the gala and after she was reunited with her childhood sweetheart Raoul, the Victome de Changy. This was also the same night that she first came face to face with the Phantom, the mysterious 'angel' who she had been learning from.
It wasn't long after this meeting that Christine began to fear the Phantom, as he slowly began throwing the Opera Populaire into chaos as his demands to ensure Christine's stardom were ignored, and she wanted nothing more than to be safe and feel protected. Raoul offered her the protection that she needed but this did nothing to stop the Phantom, who was enraged as he saw his beloved Christine becoming closer to the Victome. The final showdown occured when the Opera Populaire agreed to stage a production that the Phantom had written, with Christine as the star, in the hope of finally capturing the Phantom. Their plan to capture him failed and he escaped, taking Christine down to his underground lair for what was to be the last time. Raoul managed to get Madame Giry to take him to where the Phantom had taken Christine and it was here that Christine faced the biggest decision of her life - she had to choose between the Phantom or Raoul, and regardless of which way she chose she would have to remain with the Phantom. Eventually the Phantom realised that he could never be with Christine and that he had to let Christine and Raoul escape, which he did with great bitterness.
